Experiencing Burnout?

If you find yourself feeling emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and not personal accomplishment, this may indicate occupational stress or burnout.

ABout the MBI

The Maslach Burnout Inventory was developed by Christina Maslach & Susan E. Jackson. There are now about 5 different versions that are tailored for different occupations. The original inventory is called the MBI-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). Please see Maslach’s explanation of each dimension below.

Unfortunately, the MBI is distributed by a commercial company. Therefore, the complete survey is not available for free.

Dimensions/ Subscales Explained:

  • Emotional Exhaustion: emotionally overextended and depleted of one’s emotional resources

  • Depersonalization: a negative, cynical, or excessively detached response to other people; loss of idealism

  • Personal Accomplishment: a decline in feeling’s of competence and productivity at work; decreased feelings of self-efficacy
